William George McNeill was charged with having written a receipt liable for stamp duty without affixing a stamp, and with 12 charges of having divided moneys over £2, so as to avoid paying stamp duty. Evidence was given that McNeill collected rent totalling £2 5s fortnightly, and entered it as weekly payments of 22s 6d.

Mr Cowie (for McNeill) said he was unable to .find a precedent for the case. '

Mr Levvey, S.M., offered to make the penalty £6, so that a test case could be made, but after further legal argument, a penalty of 10s on the first charge was entered, McNeill being convicted and discharged on the others.
