MAN ACCUSED OF RECEIVING.
MONEY BELONGING TO SISTER

CHRISTCHURCH, This Dayi Charges of forging and uttering a Post Office Savings Bank withdrawal receipt for £SO were preferred against a domestic, aged 2*l, who appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. She was said to have forged the withdrawal ship in the name of Lillian May Haughey. Mi* Levyey, S.M., ordered that her name be suppressed l . The woman pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence. Immediately after the woman’s case had been heard, Hugh Francis Haughey, a pastrycook, aged 23, was charged with having stolen £SO, the property of the Postmaster-General, and with having received £SO, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Haughey pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. Detective Harding said that he had asked the accused woman about her relations with Haughey, and asked her for a sample of her handwriting. She later admitted forging the receipt, and said she had been full of remorse since. In a statement accused said she knew Haughey, and had frequently been to his home in July last. The statement continued that Haughey started to ask her for money, and she gave him £l6 in three instalments. She asked for. it back, but Haughey put her off. Haughey told # her that his sister had money in the Post Office, and if he could get it he would be able to pay her back. Haughey said he was going to Dunedin, continued accused’s statement. Hie said he would get his sister’s bank book, and she (accused) could get the money out. She Resisted at first, but then agreed. Haughey gave her the book, and she cashed the . receipt for £SO, : receiving nine £5 notes and five £l notes. She asked Haughey for he)’ £l6, and he said he would give it to her that evening, but he never came;
Accused pleaded guilty to each charge, and was committed for sentence.
