LINESMAN’S SEVERE INJURIES.

CONTACT WITH POWER WIRES.

ACCIDENT ON BEACH ROAD. A Post and Telegraph Department lineman, Mr Henry Frederick Healey, a married man, residing in Oxford Street, suffered severe burns on both his hands as a result of an electric shock he received on Saturday morning when he was assisting in the installation of a telephone at Durbar Lodge, on Beach Road. With two companions (Messrs L. McNatty and J. Chambers), Mr Healey was running a. temporary, service and with two wires in his hand he mounted a ladder leaning against a pole. When he was near the top the wires came in contact with high tension power lines. He lost consciousness and slid down the ladder, receiving abrasions to his face. While one of his companions used artificial respiration the other tapped the telephone wires and sent a message to a doctor in Ashburton. Mr Healey was unconscious for about 10 minutes.

He Was admitted to hospital, and it Was reported this morning that his condition was satisfactory.

RAILWAY SHUNTER KILLED.

CRUSHED BETWEEN TWO CARS

Mr Victor Clarence Willyams, a shunter, was killed in the passenger yard at the Christchurch railway station at 11 o’clock this moaning. He was riding on the cow-catcher of an engine, and when he stopped off he Was struck by a van on an adjacent line. The impact threw Mr Willyams against the train ho had! stepped off, and he was crushed between the two cars following the engine.

WOMAN KILLED BY MOTORCAR.

Struck by a motor-car proceeding in the same direction on the Main South Road half a mile south of the Levin railway station, Miss Jessie Cavers, aged about 45, matron* of the Boys’ Training Farm at Werarga, was killed instantly on Saturday evening. The car was driven by Henry Stephen Hart, of Wellington, and contained his wife and another passenger. Miss Cavers was walking back to the farm when she was struck from behind. There was much traffic on tlie road, cars approaching from both directions.

Miss Cavers had been matron at Wararga for 11 months. Previously she was matron of the Mount Albert Boys’ Home and had been connected with the child welfare department for some years.

FATAL FALL DOWN STAIRS.

Mr T. E. Warren, of T. E. Warren and Company, engravers, who lived at 57 Bealey Avenue, received injuries from which he died later in the afternoon when he fell down a long flight of stairs shortly after midday yesterday. Mr Warren, it seems, was working alone in his business premises, at 115 Cashel Street, when the accident occurred, but lie was able to drag himself,to the door, and attract the attention of a passer-by, who summoned the St. John Ambulance.
