FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” Sept. 23, 1885). .Concert at Pendarves.—ln aid of tlm funds of the Pendarves School a concert was held on Friday evening. The programme was opened by tea, the hostesses being Mesdames Rule, Thomas, Vucetish and Martelle. Items were given by Mesdames Lowe and Martelle, Misses Harrison, Lunt, Lambic and Gardner, and Messrs 'Larnbie, Kelsey, Midgeley and Blackburn. Mr Todd contributed a humorous reading and a farce was presented by Messrs Wells, Lewton, Wagstaff, Hansen, Ward and Angus. Mr W. H. Rule thanked the performers. Borough Council.-—At the meeting of the Borough Council, which was attended by the Mayor and Crs. Tucker, Thomas, Harrison, Roberts, Bird, J. Orr, Quill, Sealv and Williamson, the financial statement showed that there was a debit balance of £451 5s 4d. There was a total 'of £93 in unpaid rates.

Active Interest.—The Rakaia Horticultural (Society has a membership of 160, according to a report presented to a meeting on Wednesday. Teams.—The Blaring Square Tennis Club opened its season on its courts in Cameron Street West, this afternoon, when between 20 and 30 players took part. The opening ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. E. Bellhouse. Good Templars.—The weekly meeting of the Star of the East Lodge, 1.0.G.T., was held last evening, when there, was an attendance of over 70. Bro. Hewitt occupied the chair. A recitation attracted seven entries and the first prize was gained by Mr W. Carroll. Mr E. Sage, Miss Jessop and Mr S. Beauvais were placed equal for second place.
