Speaking before the Economic Committee of tho League of Nations on Mr S. M. Bruce’s resolution ou the question of co-ordinating health and agricultural administrations, Sir Janies Parr said the problem was one of bringing tho superabundant produce of the world’s farms to tho mouths of those who had no money with which Notwithstanding that New Zealand was one of the world’s largest exporters of foodstuffs her farmers were unable to make a decent living. He confessed to some difficulty in urging the argument that the State should find the money. Nothing would suit New Zealand, better than that the Governments of consuming countries should find funds with which to purchase her produce for the poverty-stricken, but lie did not feel that he should ask for such a sacrifice. Mr Bruce’s resolution, moved last week, in effect urges the Governments to examine practical means of bringing about increased consumption of foods, and invites the League Council to instruct its technical organisations to collect information on the measures of various countries for improved nutrition through increased consumption of food.
Mr Bruce argued that by an increased consumption of certain foodstuffs .specified diseases could bo eliminated and that unless people were given the benefit of science a social upheaval was inevitable.
