WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TIN WALD ACTIVITIES. There w as a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the T'imvakl Women’s Institute on Thursday in the Parish Hall. Mrs Houston (the president) presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Dunlop and Mrs Jaijie in their bereavement. Correspondence relating to the Health Camp Campaign was readi and several members were appointed to attend the meeting to be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday. Members were reminded of the group competition to be held: in St. Stephen’s Hall on September 27. Tinwald Institute is to exhibit a decorative bowl of flowers, and each Institute is to enter a thrift article.

Two delegates were appointed to attend the Mid-Canterbury Federation meeting on October 4. Mrs Scales (president of the Maronan Institute) invited members to a garden party at her residence on September 28. Mrs Houston gave a graphic and interesting report on the recent conference in. Auckland.

Mrs Cooke spoke on Mr Toomey’s appeal for Christmas cheer for lepers, and offered to forward gifts. Members agreed to give to this object. Songs by Miss C. Miller and elocutionary items by Mrs Cooke were much enjoyed. An amusing competition (biting a biscuit into the shape of a. shamrock) was won by Miss N. Houston. The competition for a jar of narcissi, arranged for effect, resulted: —-Mrs C. Bell 1, Mrs Houston 2. Hostesses were Mesdanies Cooke, Houston and Melnnes.
