THE GOLD DUTY

REQUEST FOR ABOLITION.

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day

A deputation from the Gold Producers’ Association to-day asked the Minister of Finance |(the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) for the abolition of the gold duty of 12s 6d : an ounce. Mr Coates said that last year the tax provided £104,000 in revenue. If he abolished the tax he would, have to raise taxation somewhere else.

A member of the deputation suggested the Minister license bookmakers. Mr Coates intimated that he would agree to remove the tax if the position of the country were not as difficult as it was 12 months ago.

“I am afraid you will have to leave the decision to our judgment,” the Minister said.
