The Memel territory, of 1099 square miles in area, and with a population of 149,000, was detached from Germany by the Treaty of Versailles and at first placed under the control of the conference of ambassadors, who handed it over to Lithuania, but has ti large measure of local autonomy. Germany has recently protested most strongly against tho treatment or Nazis in Memel. Germany considers Memel should be returned to her.
