FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 14, 1885) County Council Election—The election for the return of two members to fill the extraordinary vacancies on the Ashburton County Council, caused by the retirement of Messrs T. Taylor and Megson, took place yesterday. Votes were polled bv the candidates as follow:—G. W. Leadley, 211, E. G. Wright 159, I. R. 'O. C. Graham 89, J. Grigg 85, W. Strachan 66. Stock Sale—Prices at the Ashburton yards were: —Aged crossbred ewes in lamb 11s 3d to 12s; cull merino ewes 3s. Fat cattle: A medium entry, heifers £4 17s 6d to £5; store steers £3 2s; springers £3 5s to £4 os; yearlipg £2.

Dairying—The dairy industry in the Ashburton district is making very satisfactory progress. The crenmery at Lowcliffe will be finished by the contractor to-morrow night, that at Hinds is already completed and the machinery' |installed. It is possible that a trial run will be given to the plant before jthe end of the week. At Methyen and* Springfield the buildings are , erected and completed and the machinery is also well forward at the first place. Anama is the only backward creamery, but it is expected that building will begin this week. Cream is coming forward freely. Hampstead Town Board—The following have been as commissioners of. the Hampstea'd Town District, and a poll w ill he held, to elect seven members:—George William Andrews, Rupert William Crowther, Charles Edmond Horman, Richard Francis Lewis, Henry Arthur Lloyd, Thomas O’Carroll, Samuel Payne, William John Silcock, William Thompson and Samuel Wilson. County Racing Club—The following are the officers of the Ashburton County Racing Club: —President, Mr John Grigg; vice-president, Mr W. B. Denshire ; stewards, Messrs H. D'. Acland, J. Davison, W. B. Denshire, H. Friedlander, E. Gates, T. F. Gibson, J. R. Hart, J. Hampton, W. Hodgkins, L. de C. Malet, H. F. Nicoll, M. Stitt, T. E. Upton (chairman); treasurer, Mr J. Davison; judge, Mr A. S. Duncan; handicappers —gallops, Mr J. E. Henrys, trots, Mr H. Brinkman; starters —gallops, Mr H. Piper, trots, Mr H. Reynolds; clerk of scales, Mr A. Evans'; clerk of course, Mr R. Curtis; timekeepers, Messrs J. V. De Beer and F. B. Robilliard; vet. surgeons, Messrs J. McLeod and G. E. Owen; secretary, Mr A. A. Fooks.
