LOAN FOR NEW BUILDING.
COUNCIL APPLIES FOR SANCTION
ONE MEMBER DISAPPROVES. The Ashburton County Council yesterday decided to make application to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to raise a sum of £9900 for the purposes of erecting new offices for the Council. Two objections were received from ratepayers and one member of the Council voted against the motion.
The objections received were from Mr S. W, Sewell, of Ruapuna, who considered that the Council could better spend the money in some other direction, and from Messrs J. E. and W. P. Small, of Wheatstone, who forwarded a joint and formal objection. The motion to apply to the Loans Board was moved by Mr W. G'. Gallagher and was seconded by Mr J. Carr. Mr |S. P. Taylor ihoved an amendment that the question be held over till next year. This was not seconded, and the motion was carried, Mr Taylor voting against it. The County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) said that Mr Taylor’s objection would have to be put in writing, together with his reasons, which will bo forwarded to Wellington with the application'.
