MAGISTRATE’S OUTBURST.
SEQUEL TO NEW YORK RIOTINC.
“BLACK FLAG OF PIRACY.”
(United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 6.
Further complications of the rioting at the steamer Bremen, in July, when the Nazi flag was torn down, are expectedl from the action of a city magistrate, Mr Louis Brodsky, who to-day discharged five men who are alleged to have been members of the riot group.
Declaring that their actions did not constitute an unlawful assembly, Mr Brodsky, who is of the Jewish faith, bitterly attacked the Hitler regime and referred to the steamer Bremen as “a pirate ship with the black flag of piracy proudly flying aloft.” Concluding .his opinion, he declared that the emblem stood for “revolt against civilisation.” “In brief,” he added, “if I may borrow a biological concept, it is an Atavistic throwback to premediaeval, if not barbaric social and political conditions.” The lawyer who defended the prisoners was Mr Marc Antonio, a member of the United States Congress. As the German Government had asked for strict punishment of the rioters the question now asked is what action the German Emliassv is likely to take.
