Ten thousand of her mourning subjects passed before Queen Astridi’s catafalque in the same room where lay King Albert 18 months ago.
Mute crowds awaited their turn: in the form of a queue 10 deep, while the vanguard slowly mounted the marble steps of the Palace. The procession included priests, school-children, old women, labourers and peasants. Two khaki-clad aids-de-camp guarded the bier, around which flowers were heaped. Death bells in every steeple began a mournful valediction with nightfall.
