TRAFFIC IN CITIES

“I certainly Avould not approve of the general adoption of buses in Sydney and Melbourne, though I believe their use is justified in certain sections,” says Mr 11. E. Morton, Avho was one of the three commissioners appointed to control the City of Sydney a few years ago. Mr Morton who is leaving for Australia, A’ia the United States, on August 23, Avili submit to the Melbourne and Sydney City Councils important conclusions on transport traffic control and toAvn-planniug, the result of his observations during a five months’ tour of Europe and England. It is stated by Mr Morton that his lavo main reasons for opposing the general adoption of buses in Sydney apd Melbourne are, firstly that they would flood the atmosphere Avith an offensive smell and poison the ajr. Avith carbon monoxide gas; and, secondly, that these tAvo cities possess broad streets, for Avhioh a trarmvay system is infinitely superior. “I recommend both cities to consider the uso of trolley buses which are Vastly improved,” Mr Morton said.
