LAYER OF HEAT
IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE.
TEN TIMES BOILING POINT
(United Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 28.
Man will never lie able to fly to the moon, and ultra short waves cannot he of real use to radio broadcasting. These strangely dissimilar conclusions emerge from a discovery made by Professor I 1). V 7. Appleton after many months of research.
Professor Appleton declares that in the upper atmosphere there is a vast layer at a heat of KMX) degrees Centigrade, the existence of which lias been hitherto unknown to science. In it no known machinery could function.- The layer thus constitutes an impassable barrier between the world and the space beyond. This conclusion is confirmed by many members of the Royal Society with whom Professor Appleton lias conferred. The layer, in his opinion, upsets researches which are being conducted upon wireless short waves, and destroys the possibility of harnessing micro waves for radio transmission!. An official, of the World Radio Research League says the discovery of the heat belt means that all waves shorter than six metres are put out of action for clear reception.
Professor Appleton is Wheatstone Professor of Physics at the University of London. To is a member of the Radio Research Board and chairman of the British National Committee for Radio-Telegraphy. He is already famous for his researches into the ionised layers in the upper atmosphere that have considerable effect on radio.
