WELLINGTON CHURCH DAMAGED

Fire which broke out about 9.30 last night almost completely gutted the in terior of St. Vincent de Paul’s Catholic Church at Northland'. Although it is not possible to assess the full amount of the damage, it is considered that the loss will be heavy.

The outbreak is believed to havo started in the sacristy behind the altar, and quickly spread into the nave of the church. All the furniture in the sanctuary, including the altar, was reduced to the sacred pictures on the wail were destroyed.

OUTBREAK IN A SHOP.

WHANG ARET, August 20.

An outbreak of fire last night in the jeweller’s show of Julius Maurer led to the discoyory that a daring theft had taken place. A number of valuable articles had been taken. The intiuders had forced their way in through a window and a, heavily-barred door.

The Fire Brigade found the shop floor bestrewn with articles of jewellery and a smouldering mattress was beside the door of the strong-room, which the thieves failed to force, thereby missing a 'rich haul of goods and a deposit of £l5O belonging to a radio dealer next door.

Considerable damage was done to the stock in the shop by fire, water and smoke.
