ELEVENTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL.

THE* FIRST DAY SESSIONS.

JUVENILE CLASSES HEARD*. The Ashburton Competitions Society’s eleventh annual festival was comr meneed in the Majestic Tlieatre this morning and portions of the programme were decided in the Church of Christ Social Hall. The classes heard to-day were for juvenile competitors and the standard thus far' has been> excellent. The judges in the several sections are: Mrs J. W. Bhiley (Auckland), elocution; Mr- F. A. Bullock (Christchurch) instrumental and vocal; Miss Edna Agnew (Dunedin), dancing. The official accompanist is Mr D. A. Smith (Ashburton) and the official piper is Mir George Robertson (Ashburton). There were good attendances at the sessions to-day, that of this afternoon being considerably above that of the opening afternoon a year ago. The festival will be officially opened at a brief ceremony at 7.30 o’clock this evening, when the judges will be introduced. Results up to the time the “Guardian” went to press were as follow, competitors being resident in Ashburton unless otherwise stated: — Dancing Section. HIGHLAND FLING, under 14 (Ashburton County only.) Open to those who have not previously won a first prize. Recalls-— Misses Joan Sheehan and Betty Fowke. Also Competed Misses Daphne Bishop, Lynne Jackson, Colleen Giossop, Byllee Stills, Eunice Cant and Master Donald Cooke. SEAUN TRIUBHAIS, under 12. Recalls— Misses Shirley James and Ngaire Brown (Sydenham). Highly Commended—Misses Madge Robertson (Oamaru) and Nancy Stewart (Dunedin). Also Competed Misses Noeline Plank (Dunedin), Betty Fowke, Norma Addis (Christchurch), Nanie McLeod (Invercargill), Grade Cameron (Christchurch), Runa Scott (Christchurch), Joyce Welch, and Shirley Fisher (Opawa).
