A Chicago message states that Walter Bauer (professor of chemistry at Ohio University), himself taking courses at the University of Michigan, was abducted by one of his wife’s rejected suitors—and while being driven in an automobile from Annarbor, was so badly mutilated with a pen_knife by his abductor that lie died from his wounds upon arrival at Chicago. Professor Bauer, who was found lying in a pool of his own blood as the automobile rolled up to a petrol station, told the police before he died that ho believed a disappointed lover, against whom his wife had warned him, had hound, gagged and mutilated him.

Mrs Bauer, who married the professor only three weeks ago, has been summoned, with photographs of the alleged slayer. f The police said! that the operation, which was performed without, anaesthetic or antiseptic, showed considerable surgical skill.
