MAJESTIC THEATRE. “The Night is Young,” whicli Avill be the chief offering at the Majestic Theatre to-night and at tAvo sessions to-morroAv night, lias achieved the problem of blending music, drama, comedy and romance into a perfect and uninterrupted whole. Its players do not suddenly burst into song. Its music runs entirely through the picture, every note a A'ital component part. Haunting melodies, all introduced by clever and novel devices, give' it a charming continental flavour, and entrance one from first scene to filial fade-out. It has a gripping story, spectacular settings, and inimitable comedy. Ramon Novarro plays a debonair young archduke, and in bis colourful uniforms is as romantic as in the days of “Prisoner of Zenda.” He never sang better. Champagne-blonde Evelyn Laye brings a piquant new personality, plus beauty and a glorious voice, to the screen as the little ballet dancer. OLD PUPILS’ ANNUAL BALL. The annual ball of the Ashbuiton High School Old Pupils’ Association held last evening in the Orange Hall Avas a thoroughly enjoyable and very successful function. Old pupils and friends to the number of about iO couples spent a very pleasant evening. The president of the. Association (Mi E. A. Cockroft) and Mrs Cockroft, and Mr N. Robilliard (a vice-president) and Mrs Robilliard Avere among the guests. Music Avas supplied by Dabouin s oichestra, and Miss M. W’att played an extra. Messrs B. H. Knox and R. G. Ross Avere M.C.’s.
