ACCLIMATISATION
THE ASHBURTON SOCIETY.
OPOSSUM REVENUE PROTEST. The monthly meeting of Jhe Ashburton Acclimatisation Society was held on Tuesday evening, when Mr A. 0. PilbiOAV (chairman) presided. A letter Avas received from the Grey Acclimatisation' Society, asking Ashburton to support its protest regarding tho retention of the major portion of opossum revenue by the Government.
Members agreed that societies could not be expected to efficiently range and care for opossum country on the very small allocations received from the Government, and it was resolved to support the protest.
A letter Avas received from the North Canterbury Society, stating that owing to the destruction of small birds by the German oavl (little grey oavI), it had decided to pay a royalty of Is per bead on these birds, and asking the Ashburton Society to act in a similar manner.
It Avas agreed to fall in Avith the North Canterbury Society’s proposal, and the secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoll) Avas authorised to pay a royalty of Is per head on these birds. The ranger (Mr D. MeDougall), reported that there Avere at present 542,000 broAvn trout ova in the boxes at the hatchery. The eggs had eyed successfully, and Avere in good condition.
