ALARM EXPRESSED
NUMBER OF MOTOR FATALITIES. (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON NORTH, July 30. Alarm at the growing number of fatal motor accidents, and the numerous week-end reports of injuries arising from motoring mishaps, was expressed at a meeting of the executive of the North Island Motor Union. The chairman (Mr W. A. O’Callaghan) said that the increasing number of accidents would have to be arrested or the Government. and local bodies would be imposing harassing speed limits. Other speakers stressed the need for care by those driving high-powered cars, and also for caution on the part of pedestrians. Mr E. Palliser (Wellington) advocated a national educative scheme, with the Government and insurance companies contributing their share. A fund of at least £SOOO would be required. It was decided that all affiliated associations should go into the matter, arrangements to be made for a discussion at the annual conference.
