REGULATION OF SUPPLY SOUGHT

In the House of Commons the Minister of Agriculture (Mr W. E. Elliot) announced that the Government had decided that it was desirable, on agricultural grounds, to continue to assist the sugar-beet industry, hut it was necessary to set a limit to the volume of directly - assisted production. t

It had also been decided that beet sugar factory companies be amalgamated into a single corporation, and the Government proposed to invite the sugar-exporting Dominions and Colonies to examine with it the possibility of a joint endeavour to reopen international negotiations on the subject of the adjustment of supplies to the requirements of world markets, -State assistance being progressively diminished as the market conditions improved.—British Official Wireless.

Replying to a question, Mr Elliot said that the amalgamated sugar corporation will be owned by companies, but will he subject to comprehensive control. The result will be a reduction in the contribution by the State, but Mr Elliot was unable to give the exact amount The plan contained provisions against excessive profits. The Empire Conference and international negotiations will he directed to the problem of the low price of sugiar throughout the world.
