LADY CHAMPION.
MISS: HARTIGAN’S SUCCESSES. Miss Joan Hartigan’s tennis rise since 1928, Avhen she Avon the New South Wales schoolgirls’’ championship, has been meteoric. She Avas then a student at Loretto Convent, Kirrihdli, under the tennis coach, Herbert Edwards. Three years later Miss Hartigan won the girls’ New South Wales titles in both singles and doubles, and represented the State in Wilson Cup matches. In 1932 she performed the almost incredible feat of winning both the Noav South Wales singles junior and senior titles, as well as the Victorian singles title. Starting from this yeai, she, with Miss L. Bickerton, won the Neiv South Wales doubles title for three years in succession. Then came Miss Hartigan’s really big year, 1933, when she won the Australian singles title, as well as the New South Wales singles championship, the doubles with Miss L. Bickerton, and the girls’ singles and doubles Avith Miss J. Williams. An attack of influenza prevented Miss Hartigan from competing in the last Australian championship, Avhich was won by Miss Dorothy Round. Prior to leaving for England this year Miss Hartigan was coached by the professional, Jim Willard, to develop the rest of her game in support of her famous forehand drive.
