FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

East and West Coast Railway —A largely attended meeting of farmers and stock owners was held at the Tinwald Saleyards on Tuesday to consider the proposals of the Government in respect to the East and West Coast railway. The following resolution, moved by Mr C. J. Harper and seconded by Mr J. Magson, was carried unanimously:—“That this meeting, representing a large section of the property holders and ratepayers in this County is of the opinion that the terms now proposed for the construction of the East and West Coast railway, are satisfactory and that such a. favourable opportunity for commencing such an important colonial work should not be lost.”

Mount Hutt County—A notification appears in this issue to the effect that the electors of the Mount Hutt Riding intend petitioning for the constitution of that portion of the district as a separate County under the name of the Mount Hutt County. Temperance at Waliantii —A temperance meeting was held in the Wesleyan Church, Wakanui, on Wednesday evening. Mr G. W. Leadley occupied the chair and addresses were delivered by Mr G. W. Andrews and Mr I. Scott, of Ashburton. On the conclusion of the proceedings, twelve persons took pledge and it was announced that at the net meeting a local Temperance Society would be formed.

Vital Statistics.—The following are the vital statistics for the Ashburton registration district for the month of July:—Births 21, deaths 10, marriages 7. The figures last year were: —Births 20, deaths 15, marriages 10. Cycle Road Race.—The entries for the Timaru to Christchurch road race are expected to be very large. Over 150 entries were received by! the Canterbury Centre of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen. Two or three: contestants passed through Ashburton yesterday on a trial run. Police Commissioner’s Visit.—Mr F. Waldegrave (Commissioner of Police) arrived in Ashburton from Timaru by motor-car yesterday and inspected the Ashburton police "station. After visiting the Domain, Mr Waldegrave and his party proceeded to Christchurch. Skaters on the Ice, —About a dozen skaters ventured upon the ice in the Domain this morning. Only a small patch just at the entrance to the Oval was solid enough to bear the weight of adults and event it was patchy, so much so that one of the skaters fell in up to his shoulders in the water.
