EXTRA MILK RATIONS

TO BE ISSUED IN PRISONS. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 29. The announcement that in all the gaols in New Zealand the prisoners are to receive an additional daily ration of milk was made by the Minister for Justice (the Hon. J. 6. Cobbe). As a result of investigating a request that had been made to him, Mr Cobbe said, the medical officers of the various institutions had reported that an increased milk ration would prove most beneficial. The order to introduce the increased ration would take effect on Thursday. “In practically all prisons,” said Mr Cobbe, “milk can be supplied from farms worked by the institutions. In Auckland and Wanganui, however, the milk now to be supplied will have to be purchased, involving additional cash expenditure.”

The Minister mentioned that in cases of sickness the regulations of prisons and allied institutions were elastic, and the medical officers had power to order additional milk or other special diets considered necessary for the health of patients.
