ALARM EXPRESSED
ASPECTS OF TARIFF REVISION.
(Per Press Association). , WELLINGTON, July 29.
Alarm at certain aspects of the tariff revision in respect of motor vehicles assembled in the Dominion was expressed by Mr A. E. Mander, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation to-day. The changed regulations to permit the importation of spring seats, he said, would alone throw out of work a.t least 60 men. Seriously affected also would be the manufacturers of batteries, bumpers, and upholstery, together with a tannery which had imported plant to enable it to supply leather for interior furnishings. A further change in the regulations, if was understood, would permit the importation of steel cabs, etc., for motor tmclts. Hitherto the body-building for trucks had been the most steady part of the work of coachbuilders all over the Dominion, and at least a dozen firms would now find difficulty in carrying on. As all trucks had hitherto had their cabs and bodies made of New Zealand wood, the beech timber industry also would be affected.
