GRAND JURY

REFERENCE BY A JUDGE.

BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY.

THE NOTING OF TENDENCIES

(Per Press Association)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

The recent controversy concerning the merits and demerits of the Grand Jury system was the subject of reference by Mr Justice Northcroft in his charge to the Grand Jury at the opening of the criminal session of the Supreme Court to-day. "I am not going to say anything controversial about- the subject, but whatever else is said about it,” said Mr Justice Northcroft, "it must he helpful that you, as representing a responsible section of the community should take part in the administration of justice.” The administration of justice, particularly on the criminal side, could not be satisfactorily accomplished without the community being completely in approval of what was dene, his Honor added. That grand jurors should see the type of cases brought forward and note from them the tendencies in the community should react favourably, and if so the community should benefit enormously.
