ASHBURTON TOURING MATCHES NELSON AND GOLDEN BAY. The Ashburton Rugby touring team has arrived at , Motueka for its match against Golden Bay to-morrow. THE ASHBURTON UNION. DULLER TOURING TI?AM. The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, the president (Mr J. C. C. MeLachlan) presiding. Messrs A. Doig and F. Kennedy (managers) reported on the Town v. Country match, which they stated was a good one. The Town team displayed splendid form in the first spell, but the Country players wore the opposition down in the second half. It was decided to thank the managers and the players. ~Mr E. S. Chambers reported that the country primary school seven-a-side tournament would be played at Mayfield on August 17. Writing in connection with the touring team’s match against Marlborough on Saturday Mr H. R. D. Porter (manager) said the team played splendidly, the forwards being magnificent. In the fixture against the Kaikoura Club, the home team played a hard spoiling game and held Ashburton until 15 minutes from the close. The Buffer Rugby Union advised that its touring team would arrive in Ashburton from Dunedin about 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, August 8. NOVEL KICKING CONTEST.

AUSTRALIAN RULES PLAYER AGAINST MAORI. MELBOURNE, July 29. A novelty has been arranged for the Rugby match between the Maoris and Victoria on Saturday, arising from a suggestion made here that Rugby Union is not as conducive to long and accurate kicking as the Australian Rules game. The Victorian Rugby Union intends asking Nepia or Hemi to participate in a kicking contest against Harry Vallence, a prominent Melbourne player of Australian Rules football.
