BOXING.
AT TIMARU THREE ASHBURTON COMPETITORS. Three Ashburton boxers who took part in the Timaru Association’s amateur tournament last evening put up good performances, but each was In a special four-round light-weight bout, L. Ennis (Timaru), 9st 71b, beat N. Kerr (Ashburton, 9st 151 b. There was not a great deal between the panover the first two rounds. In the third round Ennis connected once or twice, but Kerr showed out as the better boxer, bis work being much cleanei than that of his opponent. Kerr used his left tellingly in the last round, hut Ennis made greater use of his right, and showed to better advantage than earlier. The decision went to Ennis. V. Cob den (Ashburton), list 9lb, and K. Giles (Timaru) met in a special middle-weight four-round bout. The pair were at close quarters for the greater part of the first two rounds, in which they broke even. Giles scored well to the body in the third round, in which he took a good many of his opponent’s blows oil liis gloves. Both fought strongly in the last round,
but again Giles scored more cleanly, and gained tlie decision. P. Brant (Tirnaru), 12st 91b, and P. Sheehan (Ashburton), list 131 b, were matched in a special four-round heavyweight contest. After a tame first round the pair got to work more in the second, Sheehan connecting to> the face with lefts and rights.' Brant had an all-round advantage, but Sheehan was very active, and dodged a good deal of trouble. The issue was open until the last round, which Brant carried by a fair margin. He used his right effectively, breaking through Sheehan’s guard time and again. Brant gained tlie verdict.
