LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the “Guardian,” July 26, 1885.) Ashburton Hounds.—The Ashburton • hounds met at the residence of Mr Andrew Dawson, Water ton, on Wednesday when there was a good attendance of local. sportsmen and visitors from Ashburton. Haying enjoyed the hospitality of Mr Dawson, a move was made to the property of Mr John Gtrigg, where a hare was found after some delay and a fair hunting run of about three miles enjoyed before puss made her escape. Another hare was soon hallo’d away and taking a straight line for the Longbeach Homestead, gave a capital run ending with a brilliant kill. After a short spell another successful east was made and those of the field who succeeded in negotiating the first fence, a most formidable one that brought a large number to earth and was particularly well cleared by Mr G. Merewether on a 14-hand; pony, were treated to a splendid run of five or six miles. The hunted hare was ultimately lost owing to a number of others crossing the scent. On the whole a most pleasant day’s sport nvas enjoyed by the field, among whom we noticed: —Miss A. Grigg, Messrs John Grigg, J. C. N. Grigg, J. Studholme, Dudley, Paterson (2), A. J. Milner, E. Merewether, J. Sawle, P. Devane, H. Davis, A. Dawson, Bair, E. Warner, J. H. Clayton and Dr. T. Leahy.
