BASKETBALL NEWS

THE GAME IN ASHBURTON. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. (By “ One of the Girls.”) The first of the representative basketball matches will take place on Saturday, when Canterbury will send two teams to play the local teams. Ashburton will be weakened % the absence of Misses C. Hewson and 0. Mahoney in the forward line. Miss Mahoney sprained her ankle at practice last week, while influenza has laid hard hands on Mjss Hewson. Three other prominent players have also for various reasons been unable to get to practice. An example of perseverence rewarded is that of Miss It./ Andrew. Miss Andrew, who has only lately taken up basketball alter an opeiation, went along to the “rep.” practices, and 1 found herself called ,upon to substitute for absent players. As she has been present at every practice the selectors felt that she had earned the right to a place in the team. A most interesting position has arisen ip the first-grade competition, three teams, Tinwald, Technical Old Girls A. and St. Stephen’s, tying for place, v.'itir nine points each. Owing to shortage of time in which to play off the tie, the executive will have a nice little puzzle to solve, unless it declares the three teams joint holders of the banner.

Splendid Tussle in Junior. After a splendid tussle in the junior grade, Rokeby wrested the shield from Technical' School A. inc Rokeby team, on the day’s play, deserved its win. Its players were, on the whole, steadier and they made full use of well-thought-out plans of attack, a feature of the game being the splendid manner in which the forwards worked the ball into their goal, and finished off bright movements with accurate goaling. The country team is to be congratulated on winning the coveted trophy at its first attempt. Allenton was very lucky to win the third grade competition from St. Stephen’s, after a very ragved, rough-and-tumble game, in which Miss S. Pollock shot the deciding goal, after the time-bell had gone, but before the final whistle.

No games -will be played on next Saturday on account of the representative matches. On the following Saturday the “Knock-out” competition will commence.

The 9-a-side handicaps are held over for the present. Time will not permit the if being played, before the school term holidays. They may possibly be played late in September.
