ASHBURTON RUGBY TOUR. THE MATCH AGAINST KAIKOURA. WIN BY FOURTEEN TO SIX. (Special to the “Guardian”) KAIKOURA, July 24. The Ashburton Rugby representative team made a good start on its tour to-day, when it defeated Kaikoura by 14 points to 6. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. Kaikoura had the better of' all the first spell, and the early part of the second. Half-way. through the second spell the advantage of weight Ashburton had in the forwards began to tell. The forwards of both sides worked well, but the Ashburton backs gave a disappointing display in the first half. The teams were: Kaikoura. Full-back: R. Stove. Three-quarters: R. Collyns, J. Davison, R. Cioss. Five-eighths: K. Osmond, R. Miles. Half: C. Saundercock. Forwards: M. Mackle, M. Fletcher, W. Mclnnes, C. Stack (capt), J. Rainey, R. Broadhurst, R. McDonald, B. Bortkwiok. A spell of midfield.play followed the kick-off, until Rainey, a Kaikoura forward, broke through on a solo run to take s play to Ashburton’s twenty-five. A penalty for handling in the scrum was given, against Ashburton, and went very wide. The Ashburton pack was not holding Kaikoura, and the touring side relied on line kicking to keep back the pressure. Kerr, the Ashburton full-back, was handling A series of line kicks brought play to Kaikoura’s territory, and the Ashburton forwards took the ball at thenfeet to near Kaikoura’s line. Mclnnes cleared with a fine solo run. Ashburton was getting the ball cleanly from the scrums, and Oates was sending the touring backs away well. A penalty taken for Ashburton by Kerr fell short. The Ashburton forwards forced play almost to Kaikoura’s line wheie a mark by R. Stove saved for the home side. A fine solo run by G. Dalton again put the visitors on the attack. .. The first score came to Kaikoura, when C. Stack put a penalty over from near the side-line, a long way back. Kaikoura forwards took play to within five yards, of the Ashburton line, but a penalty saved the visitors. Another penalty for Kaikoura, again taken by C. Stack, from a long way back, was successful. Half-time was called soon aiteiwards, with the score: ® Ashburton 0 The second half began with a determined attacking movement by Ashburton, the forwards carrying play a long way into Kaikoura territory. Kaikoura’s backs saved with kicking, Ashburton forwards builock;ed thenway to the Kaikoura line, but a force-down saved. Good kicking bv Saundercock and fast following up by the forwards sent play back to half-way, but Ashburton , redoubled their attempts to score and a series of forward rushes ended in A. Dolan scoring a good try wide out. Kerr’s kick failed < The Ashburton forwards were gaining a definite advantage m the loose, but all the Kaikoura backs defended well. A series of rushes ended with Bradford going over for a good trywide out, Kerr’s kick failed. Over-eagerness, resulting 111 a knock-on, spoiled a promising Ashburton run. Ashburton Jcept up a strong attack, which ended in a good try by D. McCormick. Kerr converted. Kaikoura attacked strongly in the closing stages, but Ashburton came away again for another good try by McCormick. Ken* missed the kick and the final score was: Ashburton Kaikoura ... ••• ® Mr J. J.
