BOXING.
MOULON OUTPOINTS WAIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 24. N. Moulin (Canterbury) 9.12, beat •‘Ginger” Waide (Nelson), 9.1.3, on points, in a 10 rounds professional boxing bout to-night. The pace was so slow that at the opening of the eighth round the referee cautioned the men that irnless the pace was increased he would declare it. no contest. ASHBURTON BOYS’ CONTESTS, Two Ashburton boys took part in boxing contests in Christchurch last evening. S. Guthrie (Ashburton), 8.9, was beaten by S. Mitchell (Canterbury) 8.9, on points. It was a very •even contest with Mitchell the stronger. It. Somerville (Ashburton), 10.6, was beaten by P. Holland (Canterbury) 10.7, on a technical knock-out.
Somerville was the more finished of the two, hut Holland was determined and game. Somerville’s strength lay in a straight left and a left nook. Holland hit freely with both hand's, especially with his right. The real test was the third round, fought at a furious pace; and with both landing heavily. Holland weathered the storm the better and forced the pace in the final round. Somerville exploited his trick of springing off the ropes once too often, and Holland hit him flush on the chin with a left hook. The referee stopped the bout when Somerville rose, helpless, at the count of nine. JARVIS BEATS HUGHES. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 24. Jack Jarvis (Eltharn), 9.3, outpointed Harry Hughes (Whangarei), 9.7, at Hawera to-night. A good contest was marred by holding, Hughes being mainly at fault. MANY NOVICE COMPETITORS. HASTINGS, July 24. A remarkable response greeted the recent call by the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association for nominations for a novice tournament, no fewer than 65 competitors forwarding nominations. This is believed to be not only a record for this province, but also for New Zealand. Such a number of entries has rarely been received, even for the national amateur championships.
