COUNTY CENTRES.
(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. A meeting of the Methvcn Public Library Committee was presided over by Mr A. G. Foreman. The honorary secretary (Miss A. M. Stone) reported that three subscribers had been enrolled since last meeting, and £2 10s had been collected in subscriptions. Twenty new volumes had been catalogued and placed on the shelves. A donation of books and magazines was received from Mr W. Booth, who was accorded a vote of thanks. MONTALTO There was a large attendance at the fortnightly euchre and dance held at the Montalto school on Saturday evening in aid of the school funds. The ladies prize was won by Mrs Rex Gallagher and the men’s prize by Mr R. J. Whiting. The consolation prizes awarded to Miss B. Anderson and Mr L. J. Woods. The music was supplied by Mr .0. L. Giddens with extras by Mrs R. J. Whiting and Mr R. Branch. Mr G. Branch was M CI CHERTSEY.
Tiie president (Mrs J. W. Watson) presided at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute. It was decided to take £5 worth of goods from the New Zealand Institute for the Blind and £2 from the disabled soldiers. A donation of £1 Is was made to the Ashburton Hospital, Mrs H. C. Page was appointed judge of the competitions fotf- the ensuing year. It was arranged to have three classes, flowers, cooking and miscellaneous, and to have a premier bloom at every meeting. The balance-sheet read by the treasurer showed a. very satisfactory credit. The competition for girdle scones resulted: Mrs W. Lambie 1, Miss Nancy Robinson 2, Mrs H. J. Wilson 3. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Hargrave, James Doig, H. C. Page, Misses Lovell-Smith and Ivy Hood.
