WHEELBARROW RACES
TO BE HELD IN ASHBURTON. COUNCIL GRANTS PERMISSION. Permission to hold wheelbarrow races in tlie Borough were last evening granted to two local organisations. The fact that tlie craze for wheelbarrow derbies liad reached Ashburton was the subject for some humour among members of the council.
The first application was from the social committee of the Ashburton branch of the Labour Party, which asked that it be permitted to hold a race starting from the council’s yard in Burnett Street and finishing at the Drill Hall, on August 2, the occasion being the holding of a carnival. Permission was also sought, and was granted, for the holding of a procession of advertisement next Friday evening. The second application was from the Ashburton Ladies’ Hockey Association, which wrote asking permission to hold a wheelbarrow race from the Post Office or the Council Chambers along Havelock Street to Grigg Street, and thence via Grigg Street to the Domain Ovel, next Saturday. The race would be held in conjunction with a function on the Oval to raise funds to send the County team to Gisborne for the New Zealand tournament.
