CABINET APPROVES
♦ COURTHOUSE SITE EXCHANGE. NEW BUILDING FOR ASHBURTON NOTIFICATION TO THE MAYOR. ‘ \ As a result of the representations of the Minister of Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) following his recent visit to Ashburton, Cabinet has approved of the exchange of sites in connection with the removal of the Courthouse from the corner of East and Havelock Streets, and a new Courthouse is to be erected on the site offered by the Borough Council. Advice to this effect was received this afternoon by the Mayor (Mr AV. H. AVoods) from the Minister of Justice.
The Council offered a section of land near the Public Library in exchange for the section on which the Courthouse now stands, and after an inspection the Minister expressed great satisfaction with the new site. The present building is to be demolished. The Council will give the section near the Library and a sum of £3500 in exchange for the corner section, which is now owned "by the Justice' Department.
It is anticipated that an early start will be made with the building of the new Courthouse.
