MOUNT SOMERS.

In honour of the King's Silver Jubilee, a tree-planting ceremony was held at the Mount Somers School on Friday. The chairman of the committee (Mr J. A. Mears), who presided, explained that the committee had purchased a gramophone, with a silver inscription, for use in the school as a memento of the jubilee, in lieu of books as had been suggested. After an appropriate address by the Rev. Trevor Williams, three native trees were planted by the pupils. Afterwards the children assembled around the flag while the National Anthem was sung. Before dispersing each child received a bag of sweets. There was a la.rge attendance at St. Aiden's (Anglican) Church on Sunday evening, when a special jubilee thanksgiving service was conducted by the Rev. Trevor Williams. Special hymns were sung, Mrs L. M. Goodrich being organist. An appropriate address was given by the vicar. Although about 15 attended for the annual parish meeting on Thursday night, it was decided to adjourn the meeting for a week owing to the wet night having prevented numerous outlying parishioners from attending. Eighty-three points of rain fell last week. As there is a liberal sprinkling of snow well down the hills, sharp frosts are being experienced. Seventeen degrees—the' highest for the present winter—was recorded yesterday morning. MONTALTO.

There was a large attendance at the Montalto ' School •on Friday when the school children assembled to celebrate the King's Jubilee. Mr W. S. Greenslade gave a silver birch tree, which was planted by Mrs R. Gallagher (wife of the chairman of the committee). Mr D. J. Monrow addressed the children, and presented each child with a photograph of the school. The flag was hoisted and the children sang "God Save the King." The ladies supplied afternoon tea.

RUAPUNA.

There was a large attendance at the opening night of the euchre parties and dances at Ruapuna. The ladies' prize was won by Miss M. Sewell. In the men's contest Mr I. Moore and Mr L. F. Bennett tied, and in the playoff Mr Moore won. The music was supplied by Mr S. Sewell, and an extra was played by Miss E. Allan. Mr T. Young was M.C. LAURISTON. An impressive and successful function to celebrate the King's silver jubilee was held at Lauriston School, and later at the Soldiers' Memorial Hall, on Friday afternoon. The pupils formed up in the- playground and saluted the school flag. The National Anthem was sung by all present. At the school garden a jubilee tree was planted by Mr H. J. Crothers. At the hall Mr C. A. Fyfe (chairman of the school committee) expressed pleavsure at the good attendance. The principal speaker was the Rev. R. S. Watson (Ashburton), who gave an address on the King and Queen, their jubilee and their Empire. Mrs Watson, assisted by the teaching staff, Mr J. A. Mackie and Miss O. Hartland, presented every pupil with a commemorative book and a small jubilee gift. The singing of the National Anthem brought a memorable function to.a close.' Afternoon tea was served by,the ladies of the district. LYNDHURST. At the monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst Women's Institute, Mrs A. C. Gadd, who presided, gave a full report on the formation meeting of the MidCanterbury Federation recently held in Ashburton. Mrs Limbrick was appointed the delegate to tbe Dominion Conference at Auckland. A demonstration on "Articles made out of motor tubes and records" was given by Mrs L. L. Aitken (Wmchmore). The competitions, which were judged by Mrs Stanton, Mrs F. Scctt and Mrs E. Woolley, resulted: —Best laundered shirt: Miss Evans 1, Mrs Rule 2, Miss Law 3. Madeira, cake: Mrs' Prebble, sen., 1, Mrs Cock 2, Mrs Symes 3. The sales table was in charge of Mrs F. Henderson. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Brawley, Brookei', W. Chambers and Miss Brooker. SPRINGBURN, At the Springburn School on Friday afternoon the silver jubilee was celebrated. Items were given by the children. The Rev. A. A. C. Lion gave an address, and the headmaster spoke on kingship and duty. The chairman of the school committee (Mr L. G. McFarlane) presented a souvenir book to each pupil, all of whom also received sweets. A commemoration tree will be planted later. A collection for the jubilee fund for cancer research amounted to £1 4s 7d. Afternoon tea was served and the National Anthem was sung. The monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Church' Committee was held on Wednesday evening. The Rev. A. A. C. Lion presided. The treasurer reported that the bazaar at Mount Somers had raised £56. It was decided to restore the cut made in the

minister's salary. It was reported that two working bees had put in order the grounds at the Mount Somers Church, and it was decided to hold a working bee at the manse this month.

EALING. : Mr J. Withell presided over a small attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Women's Institute. Final arrangements were made for the •evening meeting on Monday, which is to take the form of a lantern lecture on gardening. It was decided! that the home science lectures be sent to neighbouring institutes if they want them. The hostesses were Mesdames J, Mackenzie, Giddings and B. Withell.
