FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” May 10, 1885.) Rifle Volunteers -In response to an invitation to become an honorary member of the Ashburton Rifle Volunteers, Mr John Grigg, M.H.R., has forwarded a cheque tor three guineas, which constitutes life membership, and states in an accompanying letter:—“l have great hope that there will be no immediate need of such a force. But anyone is a benefactor to his fellow men who is the means of bringing under discipline and teaching self-sacrifice to the youfig men of the nation. Coursing Club. —At a meeting of the Ashburton Coursing Club held at the Somerset Hotel on Thursday it was resolved to hold the next meeting on June 3, when there will be a puppy stake for an unlimited number of dogs at £2 2s each, and also an all-aged stake for an unlimited number of dogs at £3 3s. It was decided to request Mr It. P. Hill, whose decisions at last meeting gave so much satisfaction, to again act as judge and a thoroughly competent slipper has been engaged for the occasion.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (F!rom the “Guardian.” May 10.. 1910.) King George Proclaimed. —Monday, May 9: The proclamation of King George as King was made in London and other cities this morning. Following a fanfare by the State Trumpeters, Garter King-of-Arins (Sir Alfred Scott Gatty) at St. James’ Palace, proclaimed George V, King of Britain and the Dominions beyond the seas. Enormous crowds joined in shouting “God Save the King.” Then escorted by an imposing cavalcade of the Life Guards, Sir Alfred repeated the Proclamation at several other places with the same ceremony. Steven thousand troops lined the route, which was crowded, and artillery fired accession salutes in St. James’ Park. Proclamation in Ashburton.—-As the Ashburton Town Clock struck 12 o’clock this morning, the Mayor (Mr 1 r H. Davis) read the proclamation from the steps of the Borough Council Chambers, and an a session service was held in the St. Stephen’s Church immediately afterwards, when the Revs. E. Whitehouse, G. B. Inglis, H. E.. Bellhouse, R. J. Liddell, and Pastor F. W. Greenwood took part.
