SUNSHINE WITH COLD WIND. i The sky was overcast in Ashburton yesterday and a cold wind blew from the east all day. When the wind changed to south in the evening, conditions became more wintry and rain fell during the night. Although the sun shone to-day the wind bleiv from the south again, and the temperature was cold. Thirteen points of rain were recorded for the 24 hours up to 9 o’clock this morning, and 15 points were registered for the previous period. A reading of 29.64 inches, compared with 29.69 inches yesterday morning, was the barometric pressure at 9 a.m. to-day. Extreme temperatures yesterday and last night were 56.5 degrees and 41.5 degrees, and those on Saturday were 57.6 degrees and 36.7 degrees. One degree of frost was experienced yesterday morning. -

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: Pressure is still low to the east of New Zealand, but an anticyclone of slight intensity is advancing across the Tasman Sea. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Strong southerly winds to gales, but later decreasing. Weather changeable with some scattered oassing .showers, at first mainly on coast, 'but improving. Temperatures cold. Seas rough.
