OPIUM DISCOVERED.
ARREST ON SHIPBOARD. (Per Plresß Association). AUCKLAND, April 27. When the Wanganella anchored ill the stream this morning, a detective and Customs officers boarded her and arrested a passenger in his cabin. They found six tins of prepared opium in his hip pocket. Later, a man named Donald John Macdonald, aged 53, a mechanic, pleaded guilty to a charge of illegally importing opium. On the application of the Collector of Customs he was remanded in custody for further inquiries. The minimum penalty is £125, or a term of imprisonment.
