THE ASHBURTON UNION. MATCHES PLAYED ON SATURDAY There was not a great deal of form displayed in the matches in the Ashburton Rugby Union’s competitions played throughout the County on Saturday afternoon. Most fixtures were a scramble, with only occasional flashes of bright work. Rain fell in most districts, and made conditions slippery, with the result that players had some difficulty in handling the greasy balls. One senior match took place at Methven, and the other one was played in Ashburton. Technical Old Boys beat Allenton by 14 points to 6, and Methven had a narrow win over Rakaia by 6 points to 5. Technical Old Boys opened the scoring within a minute or two # of the kickolx. J. Methven 6, Rakaia 5., Heavy showers of lain fell at Methven for the senior match between Methven and Rakaia, making the ball difficult to handle. Rakaia was on the defensive from the kick off until a free kick gave relief and Methven had to force down. O. Davison failed to goal two penalty kicks awarded to Rakaia. From tight play a forward rush was set up by Rakaia, and the ball was taken over the Methven line. Doig followed up fast and touched down smartly close to the posts. Davison converted. Rakaia 5, Methven nil. Hard plav developed up to half-time, with Methven attacking. Rakaia’s defence was good. When play resumed Methyen took the offensive, and was unfortunate in missing three points when T. Lilley failed to goal a penalty kick. J. Lilley was forced out at the corner after a good run down the line, but Methven came again, and G. Stephen set the backs in motion, T. Lilley scoring. His kick failed. Rakaia 5, Methven 3. Methven kept up the pressure, and C. Pablecheque made an opening for G. Kelly to score. T. Lilley’s kick went wide. Methyen 6, Rakaia 5. Mr C. W. Wellman was referee.

JUNIOR GRADE. Old Boys had a decisive victory over Methven B. winning by 22 points to nil. F. Jordan obtain three tries. C. O’Grady, B'. Lloyd, and D. Ross one each, and D. White converted two tries. Mr E. McDougall was the referee. Hinds defeated Tinwaldi at Hinds by nine points to nil. Tries were scored hv J. Procter and A. Rowell, and B.

Mclnnes kicked a penalty goal. Mr G. Cartwright was the referee. Playing at Methven, Mayfield defeated the home team by three points to nil, a try being scored by W. Young. Mr A. H. Guiney was, the referee. Rakaia beat Springburn by default.

THE ASSOCIATION CAME. THE ENGLISH CUP FINAL. LONDON, April 27. In the Cup final Sheffield Wednesday defeated West Bromwich Albion by 4 goals to 2. Ninety-three thousand were packed in Wembley Stadium to see the match. Special trains brought 200,000 from all parts of Britain to participate in the celebrations. The majority were unable to see the match, and these enlivened London with rattles and klaxons.

The Play Described. Rimmer, the cinema jazz pianist, won the Cup for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring two goals in the last three minutes. It was the heaviest scoring final since Bury defeated Derby County by 6 goals to nil. in 1903, and is acclaimed as the finest and most thrilling match since the war. Sheffield Wednesday startlingly scored within two minutes, and Albion equalised after 21 minutes’ play, but Sheffield Wednesday regained the lead early in the second half. Albion again evened, performing 4he unprecedented feat of equalising twice in a Cup final. The Albion defence crumpled ini the last few minutes against Sheffield Wed; nesday’s swinging passes. Rimmer, at outside left, thus far had been ineffective, but he had an inspired period, when, amid thunderous cheering, he snapped up two chances. The cold weather prevented the King from attending.
