FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From “Guardian,” April 29, 1885.) Chertsey Tea Meeting.—The annual tea-meeting in connection with the Cliertsey Sabbath School took place in the Schoolhouse on Friday evening. The attendance oh parents and friends was only moderate. Excellent arrangements had been made for the comfort and refreshment of visitors, and the plentifully provided tables were presided over by the Misses Angus, Wilkinson, and Todd. Several friends had decorated the schoolroom with evergreens, and the room bore quite a gala appearance. After a substantial tea had been partaken of, addresses of a suitable nature were given by the Rev. Mr West, of Southbridge, and Messrs Stuart and Reycraft. Mr McDowell rendered a financial statement which showed that monetary affairs were in excellent condition. Musical selections were given by a party from Ralcaia, led by Mr Stuart, and the school children rendered a selection of hymns, conducted by Mr D. Todd. The Misses Bruce and Campbell accompanied the vocalists on the harmonium A sacred duet- was also contributed by Messrs Todd and Siivester. : . Reduction of Debt.—At the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus on Sunday, services were conducted by the Rev. Father Chastagnon. The congregations were very large, and the oitertory, which will be devoted; to the reduction of the debt on the church,, amounted to £4OO. It is expected that fully £7OO will be collected for the same purpose during next month.

County Brass Band.—The Ashburton County Brass Band held its eighth annual meeting last evening, when the election of officers resulted as follows Patron, Ml T. Bullock; president, Captain-Quartermaster G. D. Hefford; bandmaster, Mr C. B>. Gass; deputy-bandmaster, Mr H. W. Gillies; treasurer, Mr C. H. Tisch; secretary, Mr T. Hughes; assistant secretary, Mr C. N. Nottingham; auditor, Mr H. H. Foolts; drum-major, Mr T. McDonald; sergeant, Mr W. Hodgson; corporal, Mr C. Tiscli; lance-corporal, Mr D. McDonald; custodians, Messrs C. J. Cooper and E. Car dick; committee, Messrs C. B. Gass, H. W. Gillies, C. H. Tisch, T. Hughes, C. Nottingham, D. McDonald, D. 'Leitch, E. Scales, E. Clark, and E. Clements- finance committee, Messrs H. A. Humphreys, G. D. Hefford, Scales and Gobbe. A number of vice-presidents were also elected. Mr Humphreys was accorded hearty thanks for his past services as conductor, and was elected a life member of the band.
Ladies’ Hockey Club.—-At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Ladies” Hockey Club, the election of officebearers resulted:—Patron, Mr H. Davis; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Davison, H. A. Humphreys, F. Mainwaring, and the Rev. E. Whitehouse; captain, Mr A. Thomas; vice-captain, Miss E. Clark; secretary and treasurer, Miss E. Andrewes; committee, Misses A. Stock, Warner, Hewson, Armstrong, A. Thomas,'E- Clark, E. Andrewes. ' Hakatere Club.—The following committeemen were elected for . the halfyear by the Hakatere Social and Athletic Club: —Messrs H. R + . .£ MeElrea, J. H. Sherlock, A. J.
