THE GAME SEASON

PROSPECTS FOR THE SHOOTING. SPORTSMEN HAVE HIGH HOPES. "Prospects for a successful season are very bright, and it is reported that there are more grey duck about at present than there have been for several seasons past," said the secretary of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society (Mr J. B. Nicoll) this morning when asked by a representative of the "Guardian" what the prospects were for the shooting season, which opens next Wednesday. The Ashburton Acclimatisation Society has been granted an open season for both imported and native game. The former class includes chukor and quail, and a special license of £1 is necessary for this game. _ The Tripp Survey District, which has been closed for several seasons, has been opened for shooting again this season, but sportsmen are reminded that Lakes Clearwater, Camp and Heron and the Maori Lakes in this district are sanctuaries.

Reports received by the society from station owners in the back-country indicate that chukor are plentiful. A season of one month was granted for these birds last year, but this year they may be taken during the whole of the open season for game. The birda are multiplying rapidly, and have been seen on the lower slopes. They are shy, but provide excellent sport. Last season the sale of licenses in this area was the best for a considerable time, and it is anticipated that the sales this year will maintain the high standard set. "All we want now is suitable weather," concluded Mr Nicoll. "Sportsmen are eagerly waiting for the opening, and hoping for misty conditions on Wednesday morning."
