FAREWELL DINNER.

MR STERLING'S WORLD TOUR. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 26. Executive officers of the Railway Department entertained Mr H. H. Sterling, chairman of the Railways Board, at a dinner on Wednesday to say au re voir before his departure on a world tour. Mr G. H. Mackley, General Manager of the who presided, said that probably never before had it been more necessary .for the head of a great industrial and transport concern such as the New Zealand Government Railways to go abroad and ascertain on the spot what the world was doing. All felt proud of the conspicuous and successful part Mr Sterling had played in the transport industry of the Dominion.

Mr Sterling was presented with a travelling rug as a token of esteem from the executive officers of the Department. Mr Sterling, in reply, mentioned a number of transport problems which had to be faced, and said that when he notified the Government of his intention to make a tour he had been asked to make certain inquiries on the Government's behalf about the general transport problem in other countries, and also regarding the development of the tourist traffic. These matters would have his attention, but he expected to be fully occupied with the immediate railway problems of other countries in so far as they might' apply to the present situation of the railway industry in New Zealand.

The opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr J. Sawers, information officer, who will accompany Mr Sterling.
