TOURNAMENTS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, April 28. The finals of the tennis tournament at Scarborough resulted as follows: Women's Singles—Miss Joan Hartigan (Australia) defeated Miss R. Smith 6-2, 6-2. Women's Doubles—Misses Hartigan and Lawrence defeated Miss Bullock and Mrs Fontres 6-4, 10-8. In the semi-final of the women's singles of the tournament at Birmingham Senorita Anita Lizana (Chilean) ' defeated Miss K. Stammers (England), 6-4, 6-1. Miss Hartigan is now singles champion of both North England hardcourts and grass'courts. The Chilean, Senorita Lizana, although only 20 years of age, and five feet in height, has a great reputation in Chile. English critics acclaim her and declare she resembles Mdlle. Lenglen in cleverness. Miss K. Stammers, who ranked as Britain's number three player, "was unable to; counter Senorita Lizana's terrific torehand and backhand drives and daring drop shots. ■ ■
H. W. Doust expresses the opinion that Senorita 'Lizana, despite the promise shown, is not sufficiently experienced to win the title at Wimbledon this year.
THE ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. AUSTRALIANS WIN DOUBLES. ROME, April 23. Matches in the Italian Lawn Tennis Championship Tournament resulted' as follows: Women's Singles—Final: Mrs Sperling (England) defeated Signonna Valerio (Italy), 6-4, 6-1. ' Men's Singles Semi-final: Hines (England) defeated Artens (Holland), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-B. Mixed Doubles—Quarter-finals: 1. J. Hushes and Miss Dearman (England) defeated D. P. Turnbull (Australia) and Sigriorino Valerio, 3-6, 6-2; H. 0. Hopman (Australia) and Mdlle.
