RACE TIMING IN SWEDEN. The Bergsaker Racecourse at Sundsvall, in North Sweden, has lately been equipped w,ith the latest apparatus for electric starting and timing of races. Preliminary warning and the final "go" are given to -.the jockeys by means ot loud speakers,, reproducing gramophone records and controlled from a central tower on the course. At the same time electric timing is set in operation. The competitors are lined up behind a stretched rubber tape, or if it is a distance handicap behind a series of such tapes. Tihe jockeys first hear from loud speakers ''ready," then at intervals of five seconds the words "one," two," and "go." As the loud speaker calls out the word "go," one end of the rubber tape is released, the cord flies across the tracks, leaving the way clear, and the runners are "off." Simultaneously, the time is registered, and the totalisator'booths are notified that the taking of bets must stop. The finishing time is taken by mean's of light rays. As a horse passes the judge's box one of four light rays is interrupted, and the time when this happens is recorded electr-ically.
