Colonel S. C. P. Nicholls (0.C., Southern Command) passed through Ashburton on the south-bound express train this morning.

Mr W. Rapley, formerly of Ashburton, is spending a holiday in the town. He will represent the West Coast in the cricket match against Ashburton County next Saturday and Monday.

The Rev. D. B. Forde Carlisle, Palmerston North, has accepted a unanimous call to the pastorate of the Berhampore Baptist Church, Wellington South. Mr Carlisle will begin his ministry at Berhampore on Sunday, March 31.

News of the death of Judge John Barton Payne, chairman of the American Red Cross and of the Board of Governors of the League of Red Cross Societies, has been received at New Zealand headquarters, Wellington. Judge Payne was eighty years of age.

An official visit to Rome is to be made shortly by the Right Hev. Bishop Listen (Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland). He will leave Auckland on April 5, and will be abroad for about eight months, during which time he will visit England, Ireland and Scotland. He will be accompanied by the Very Rev. Monsignor Ormond, of St. Benedict's, Newton, and the Right Rev. Monsignor Delaney, of South Dunedin.

Miss M. Kelly, who will leave shortly for Invercargill, was entertained at a farewell function by the drama circle of the Ashburton District Women's Institute at the residence of the convener (Mrs W. J. Minogue) yesterday afternoon. On behalf of the circle, Mrs Minogue presented Miss Kelly with a brass fruit bowl in recognition of her services. Both Miss Kelly and Mrs W. T. Kelly were the recipients of bouquets. Mrs M. MacMillan and Miss W. Bruce rendered vocal solos and a competition was won by Mrs Maginness.
