WINDOW SCRATCHING

FRESH DAMAGE REPORTED. TWO, OR THREE INSTANCES* OFFENCES DURING WEEK-END. A little more than a year ago the defacement of plate-glass shop-windows became something of an epidemic in Ashburton, but up to last week-end no further complaints had been received. This undesirable practice has broken out again in a small way, for two or three fresh markings were reported to-day. In no case, however; has the damage been sufficient to warrant shop-keepers going to the expense of replacing their windows. . nm A suggestion that the new scorings number more than a few is explained by the fact that, when the sun strikes the windows from a particular angle, i > appears that many of the cuts are fresh. It was stated to-day that had any of the defacements been deep, si me of the windows would not have stood up to the pressure imposed on them by heavy north-westers. It is believed that on this occasion, as in others, the bevelled wheel of a cigarette lighter has been responsible for the markings, and that the intent has not been more serious.

The police are making inquiries into the complaints.
