“INSULT TO CHRIST.”
EPSTEIN’S SCULPTURE. CATHOLIC PAPER’S CRITICISM. (United Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, March'S• The “Catholic Herald,” in commenting on Epstein’s Christ, says: “It is painful to look at this sculpture in which we only see a distorted reminiscence, debased and sensuous the flut features not of a man, hut of an Asiatic monstrosity. We protest against the insult offered to Christ in this work of an artist of genius.” A message published on Friday said: “The sculptor Jacob Einstein’s annual sensation is on exhibition at the Leicester Galleries. It is an eleven-foot marble weighing seven tons, representing Christ crowned with thorns. The rough simplicity of the carving recalls Easter .Island figures. There is just enough detail to suggest tortured features and roped hands.
