\ GALA CUP CONTESTS. COMPETITIONS WELL ADVANCED. With a total of 53 entries compared with 19 last year, the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s annual gala cup championships were opened on the Ashburton and To Marae Lawn Tennis Club’s courts on Saturday. Many interesting games were played and the competitions were well advanced, and will be concluded on Saturday, March 23. There was a good attendance of the public. Saturday’s results were as follows: Senior Championships. Men’s Singles. First' round: Iv. Fowke beat A. J. Rawstorn, by default; A. C. Shaw beat A. Stanley, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4; R. Bryant beat C. Junior Championships. Men’s Singles. A. Oakley beat H. Harper, G-2, 5-7, 6-3. These were the only competitors in this event. Women’s Singles Final—Miss H. Harper beat Miss M. Crossman 6-2, 6-3. DAVIS CUP STARS DEFEATED. BROMWICH OUTCLASSES TURNBULL. ADELAIDE, March 10. In the final of the singles in the South Australian tennis championships, J, Bromwich defeated D. P. Turnbull, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2. The 16-year-old Bromwich completely wore down Ins opponent-, as lie did on the previous day when he defeated the other Dayis Cup player, Adrian Quist, in the semi-final, 6-4, 5-7, 7-9, 6-3, In the other semi-final D. 1. inm bull beat V. McGrath 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.
