Fifteen thousand acres of rich farmland in the Mount Gambier district were swept by one of the most destructive bush fires on record. At least two homes were destroyed. Sheep, pigs and poultry perished in hundreds. Volunteers worked desperately to check the fire a.s it raged toward Mount Gambier on a front of from three to four miles. The flames reached within two miles of the town before a change of wind carried them toward rougher country. Drizzling rain eventually assisted the fire-fighters, the situation being brought under control. It is estimated that the damage is £20,000 to £30,000.
